You will construct a (minimum seven page) expository paper (one that EXPLAINS) in which you choose ONE of the four major characters from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” (Hester Prynne, Pearl, Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale) and explain some important aspect of that character’s personality by exploring that character’s relationship to the other three major characters of the novel.
This means that your paper will have three body sections: one each in which you examine the relationship of your chosen character to the other three. You will not be able to explore ALL of any character’s personality or relationships. That would require an essay far, far longer than the one that you have been assigned. You need to narrow your scope to something about that character that can be examined thoroughly within the confines of the assignment you have been given. For example, you can’t explain everything about Hester in seven pages, but you COULD explain how Hester functions as a protector to the other three characters. You don’t have room to explain everything about Pearl, but you COULD explain how Pearl serves as a moral compass for each of the other three characters.
Your essay must be in MLA format (Times New Roman, double-spaced, etc, etc), free of all errors (which means you need to have REVISED it)
