Description

Over the course of the last two or three years, the media as reported on a number of incidences of collective behavior around the world. Collective behavior appears in 3 forms: crowd behavior, mass behavior, and social movements. We have watched the news coverage of over-zealous fans celebrating their team’s victory turning in a destructive mob. We’ve seen reports of riots and protests in response to some injustice act or actions where people have taken a stance to say enough is enough. Some collective behaviors have enough momentum to evolve into social movements instituting social change on national and/or international level. But how and why?

Ralph Turner and Lewis Killian’s Emergent Norm theory states that there are a number of factors that may motivate people to participate in collective behavior. While some are temporary and seem to disband as quickly as they appear, others give birth to social movements. However, the underlying assumption is that a group is guided by norms (shared cultural expectations for behavior) that emerge in response to a situation, and as a result, the behavior of those in the crowd is structured to fit within the collective action (Ferris and Stein 2016).
