Unit III – Topics in Art Group Discussion ARTS1301 Fall 2017

This group discussion is concerned with the destruction of art and censorship. Students will watch several short videos and review one web site on these two related topics. Students will then post an original response and then respond to two other students’ posts. In other words, students will make a total of 3 posts worth a total of 50 points. Please read the instructions carefully as this discussion has multiple parts.

This assignment fulfills the following state mandated SLO (Student Learning Objective): Social Responsibility. Social Responsibility: Students will demonstrate intercultural competence by identifying the contributions of various cultures; understanding the role civic responsibility plays in how institutions interact; and identifies the challenges associated with regional, national, and/or global communities.

Posting Deadlines

– Posting #1: Post response to Professor’s topic thread (1 post addressing both Part 1 and Part 2); Due by Thursday, November 30 10:00 am

– Postings #2: Posts to Student responses (pick 2 student responses and post 1 response to each); Due by Thursday, December 7, 10:00 am

Be sure to hit “reply” directly from the original posting from the professor (first deadline) and then be sure to hit “reply” directly from your colleagues’ original posting. This will keep the conversation threads organized.

The discussion will be closed for grading on the final due date. No late postings will be accepted after due dates.

This assignment is intended to act as a substitute for classroom discussion on topics related to artistic processes and personal experiences in the visual arts. This discussion is in the spirit of academic discourse. It should be fun to discover new processes and to learn from other students who have attempted some of them. Please be mindful of your tone when responding in writing. Differences of opinion are acceptable; derogatory statements are not acceptable.

Grading Rubric

This assignment is worth 50 points total.

Posting Deadline #1: The two parts are worth 15 points each. (2 @ 15 = 30 points)

Posting Deadline #2: The two response postings are worth 10 points each. (2 @ 10 = 20 points)

There is no minimum or maximum amount of “text” for this assignment; however, a simple “I agree…” is not a response. How and with what do you agree? Explain. Your comments should show that you read the passage(s) and watched the video links. I am hoping there will be a healthy interchange of experiences and ideas related to our course content.

Write1-2 paragraphs that demonstrates that you have watched and thought critically about the required videos, the UNESCO web site, and have read the textbook pages posted above. In addition, your post should address the following questions: Is censorship ever appropriate? If so, when? How do we as American citizens address the destruction of human history at world heritage sites? What would you do if this was happening in your community? This portion of the assignment is worth 15 points.

Part 2. A type of Censorship experienced recently is included in your textbook on page 655. Read about the reaction to Fischl’s Falling Woman. Then review the video of the artist discussing his creation of the statue (video includes images of artist working in his studio) for the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
