I believe that culture is very important to an organization and its ability to execute its strategy in an effective manner.  “A culture that is well matched to the chosen strategy and the requirements of the strategy execution effort focuses the attention of the employees on what is most important to this effort” (Thompson, Peteraf, Gamble, & Strickland, 2018, p. 354).  A corporate culture can have a positive or negative affect on an organization.  It the instance of positive cultures, it can assist employee performance, and attract and retain top talent.

Based on my review of the “best companies to work for” it appears that many of the companies appear on the list year after year.  Most of the organizations seem to offer a mix of good pay and benefits along with a corporate culture that compliments the corporate strategy.

My organization’s culture is very much driven by performance and teamwork.  The culture is also very conservative compared to other organizations and avoids risk.  Compared to other companies within the industry this is typical.  Comparing my organization strictly to its competitors, I would say that we are more driven toward empowering employees and generating more business and increasing efficiencies.  Over the past 3-4 years we have went all in with Lean management and CI initiatives and training managers.  With a change in business we have also went through two separate work force reduction programs that focused on management.  These work force reduction programs are often very stressful for employees, and have an ability to impact culture and morale in less than positive manner.

Core values and culture are essential to the overall success of an organization.  Starbucks was rated as one of the best companies to work for and i do believe the company has the right individuals to be success. I feel their demand comes not only from the elite coffee status, but in the company as a whole as well.  Starbucks Corporation’s 16,700 retail stores, which serve some 50 million customers in 51 countries each week (Cooke, 2010).  Starbucks is known for their global corporate citizenship which can continue that demand. They currently donate food to food banks and donate at least 10 percent of their profits. They have moved forward with recycling actions and strategies as well as conservation of energy.  They have also tried to figure out ways to reduce their global impact and to help farmers that the work with for the cocao bean.

They partner with Arizona State for increased education for its employees as well.

Peter D. Gibbons, executive vice president of global supply chain operations made the following statement about Starbucks “Creating a strong pipeline at all levels is part of our core mission to improve service, lower cost, and develop talent “(Cooke, 2010).

The organization that I work for is Calvin Nelms Charter School,. We are the only charter high school in North East Katy and we understand the importance of an educated, well prepared future health care workforce who have the knowledge and skills that are reflective of modern practices.  Viewing personal educational development and exposure as one of its main responsibilities, CNCHS follows the state’s curriculum guidelines to identify the skills and competencies needed now and in the future and we work to ensure that we reflect that in our guidance.  In alignment with our mission of providing a personalized learning environment to promote greater student achievement, we have educators to increase our rigor and relevance in today’s school atmosphere.   This, congruent with the safe climate, self responsibility, and community service can enable leadership and therefore effect student performance.  The philosophical foundations of Calvin Nelms Charter School include, but are not limited to ensuring that all students have a potential and purpose and the ability to achieve high academic standards. I feel that we do have the right individuals on the bus to complete our mission.

The residual value is an estimate of how much an asset will be worth at the end of its useful life (Investopedia, 2017). In my view residual values are relevant to capital investment analysis since they represent future cash inflow. Depending upon the asset and quantity of the asset associated with residual value, it can make significant impact upon the capital investment analysis. For example ,if a pharmaceutical company decides to replace their 100 printers with new ones in order to protect protected health information (PHI).  Company decides to do so since there were multiple incidents where a patient’s (PHI) was left on the printer since employees forgot to pick it up after printing. The new printers are designed in such a way that they will only print when an employee scans in badge which means he/she is there to pick up the printed paperwork. If residual value of printers is not used during investment analysis, it will not represent accurate cash inflow and may let managers to believe that it is not a doable investment. Whereas taking the residual value into consideration will make significant and favorable impact towards investment.

When determining whether or not residual or salvage values should be included in the capital expenditure analysis, I believe the values should be included. Capital expenditures are considered to be investments to a business. Most investments become positive gains for businesses and can generate income. Since some assets depreciate it is very important to determine its useful life. Once an asset is old and has been sold, more income is generated. “Projected disposal or residual values of replacement equipment are also relevant because they represent future cash inflows” (Crosson & Needles, 2014). Since these values allow some insight as to what income will be gained in the future, the values should be included. Although the values may distort the final outcome of the current capital expenditure analysis, as it is not received until the end of the assets’s useful life, recording them will show any projected income.
