Research Paper (100 points)

Students will conduct a research project throughout the semester and write a brief, research paper. The research project should demonstrate the data analysis skills (descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis, and multivariate analysis) which were learned in class. The topic of research project can be your choice based on the available GSS data sets. Students are encouraged to choose a topic from the materials offered in this course, or from a familiar topic that was studied previously. Three to five peer reviewed references are required. You may use text books from prior Sociology/Criminal Justice/Social Work Classes to develop a hypothesis for analysis. Paper is written in ASA style and includes:

About 150 words, Italicized: and centered. Included are the issue/problem; the purpose; the data you will use, what statistical results you expect, and the practical implications from your study.

Introduction: (use headings for all sections except for the introduction)

Thesis statement:

A clear statement that] provides direction for the paper. Briefly state what this paper is about, what is the reader to expect in the rest of the paper. Your study will answer questions raised/unanswered by other studies. (You will use GSS data to answer the question(s)).

Indentation and Headings follow ASA format

Literature Review

Logically follows thesis (The topic of research project can be your choice based on the available GSS data sets. Hopefully you can use your earlier literature review articles. If not do a library database search for peer reviewed journal articles, current within ten years, minimally three to five (3/5)-current within ten years, Wikipedia or popular journalism articles are not acceptable. You may also use text books from prior Sociology/Criminal Justice/Social Work Classes to develop a hypothesis for analysis. reviewed references are required.)

Summarize your theoretical background

Summarize prior research in this area (what did the 3/5 articles say about this proposed relationship?)

How does your research enter into the chain of research? Will you expand or confirm prior research?

Methods Section:

Hypothesis (specify the expected relationship between the causal/independent variable(s) and the result/dependent variable)

Data (Use one of the three GSS files.)

Variables-description (Specify which variables you will use)

Analyses: The research project should demonstrate the data analysis skills (descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis, and multivariate analysis) which were learned in class.

Results Section:

Include tables describing your findings (insert the line chart, graphs, tables)

Interpret these tables

Summary and Conclusion:

Summarizes and ties back to thesis

Suggestions for future research
