Assignment type : Research Paper

  Description

Our final assignment is designed to help you navigate the shift from essay to paper. An argument-driven paper utilize  arguable thesis statement and carefully chosen and organized evidence to defend a position on a particular issue. This is the most common type of paper assignment in college-level writing and will be the primary kind of assignment you will encounter in other courses.

In class, we discussed the three pillars of rhetoric (logos, pathos, and ethos) and how they are used in argumentation. We also discussed how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. used them in “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” We have also discussed the various ways evidence can be used: evidence can be both fact (such as statistics and research) and opinion (from credible sources). Logic is also a powerful tool in argumentation; sometimes,  is referred to as reasoning, and faulty reasoning can destroy the author’s credibility (his or her ethos) and make for an unconvincing paper. It is always important to use relevant and sufficient evidence when making an argument.

For your final assignment for this class, please visit the Palm Beach State College LibGuide called “Research Tools for a Post-Truth World” (http://palmbeachstate.libguides.com/fakenews). As you explore the topic of “fake news,” please plan and write a short argument-based paper on a topic related to the following questions:

  • What is “fake news”?
  • How has our construction of “echo chambers” on social media changed how we view what is real or fake? What role does confirmation bias have in what we believe to be truth?
  • Does the media have a duty or responsibility to seek out the truth? Has the media changed now that corporations with a larger interest in making money own most media outlets?
  • How can we separate what is truth from what is “fake news”? As educated citizens, is it our duty to combat fake news?
  • What role does ethos play in who is presenting the news? How can we judge a person’s ethos?

You are not required to answer all of these questions; they are here to help you figure out an approach to the topic. The main objective of this assignment is for you to write an argument-driven paper with appropriate evidence and reasoning.

For this paper, you are required to cite at least three outside sources (or approximately one per body paragraph). The easiest way to find sources is through the LibGuide, but I have also provided sources on Blackboard that you can use if you wish.

ANY PAPER THAT CONTAINS PLAGIARIZED MATERIAL WILL RECEIVE A ZERO AND YOU WILL FAIL THE COURSE. YOUR FINAL PAPER IS MEANT TO REFLECT YOUR OWN ORIGINAL WORK AND WILL DETERMINE WHETHER YOU ARE READY FOR ENC 1102.

Paper Requirements:

  • Your paper should be a minimum of 1000 words. The ideal range is between 1000 and 1200 words; you are free to go over the minimum range, but it does not guarantee a better grade and, in some cases, may actually cause a lower grade if your paper loses focus.
  • The final word count for the paper should be posted at the bottom of the paper and does NOT include the header or, if you have one, the title. Works Cited page must be included at the end of your paper. You can make one easily through EasyBib, or choose to set one up yourself through your word processing program.
  • All papers should be properly formatted in MLA style; please check your handbook or the Purdue OWL for reference. Outside sources must be properly and accurately documented according to MLA standard. Your essays will be run through plagiarism detection service and any essay that contains plagiarized material will receive a zero.
  • All papers will be submitted electronically through Blackboard and graded and returned electronically through Blackboard. Papers should ONLY be submitted in .doc or .docx format; no other format will be accepted. Additionally, papers should only be submitted through email in emergency situations.
  • Papers are due by 11:59 PM on the due date. I reserve the right to dock grades for late papers as explained in class syllabus. Please try your best to turn in work on time so that you will not fall behind. If you need help, please come talk to me during office hours or schedule a session at Writing Center.
